Mandatory Evacuation
However, observing the imposing nature of the hurricane, Mayor Ray Nagin turned her decision within a few hours and called for mandatory evacuation. Now, evacuating the whole of town in a few hours was next to impossible. That is why the government decided upon the football stadium Superdome to accommodate the citizens. Well, this “last resort” shelter housed 25000 people. Despite having thousands of people crammed inside the stadium, there was still a big part of the city left outside fending for themselves. Not everyone was lucky enough to reach the Superdome.
