The Danish royal family was presented with the Broholmers by King James VI in 1500. This is the earliest history of these dogs. They were mixed with butcher’s dog and produced Danish dogs. They are the forefathers of Danish dogs. They were favorite among the Aristocrats and affluent people that used them as guard dogs, to herd sheep and livestock and hunt deer. Although, the demand for big hunting dogs dwindled so did for this canine. If it was not for Niels Fredrick Sehested this breed would have wiped off the earth.
