The cistern usually made of reinforced concrete, fiberglass, steel, cinderblock, or precast concrete are commonly located underground or in a concealed room. In order to store water in a cistern one needed to have a gutter system and downspouts that would direct the flow of water from the roof to the reservoir. And after having water in the cistern one could get it for use by plumbing. Surprisingly, the cistern found by cyrix686 was in a good enough state to be reused. But who would use it again when you have modern technologies.
