Alvarenga and Córdoba had spotted a mountain and were moving towards that when their motor began to roar uncomfortably. The noise alerted Alvarenga because he knew any problem with the engine would put them in a big trouble. Unfortunately, that was exactly the case here, the motor had broken down leaving them helpless in the ocean. With the motor, the courage of Alvarenga too broke down and he started looking all around if anything was there he could put in use to help themselves. It was then he remembered he had a radio on the ship.
