7. 1986 – Argentina Beat England 2-1

Well, this match was the perfect mixture of disappointment and excitement both and the credit for that goes to Argentina’s player Diego Maradona. The urge to win this quarter finale game that held between Argentina and England was also fuelled by Falklands war happened in 1982. The scorching heat initially did hamper player’s performance giving the game a slow start. After a while, England started getting back in form and scored five goals thanks to striker Gary Linekar.

Punch Kicking Controversy

In the second half, Shilton the English keeper tried to punch the ball driven by miscued clearance and it was then the most crucial moment of the game took place. Maradona who was six inches shorter than Shilton managed to reach the ball before him and punched it right through the empty net with his fist. 

Went  Unnoticed

Now, it was as clear as day that he had used his hand to get the ball to the net that obviously, made England red with anger and they complained about this to the match officials. However, the officials failed to perceive the violation and decided to give Maradona leeway. It was one of the two most surprising moment that the midfielder made, the next one was only five minutes away.

Hand Of God

Maradona got a pass right after five minutes of the first incident. In order to keep it safe, he crouched up and low to the right wing dodging two England players. Soon after getting past around five defenders he entered the box, he scored another historical goal that in history got registered as ‘the goal of the century’.

8. 2010 – Uruguay Drew Ghana 1-1

When Ghana secured a place in the quarterfinals, the Africans thought that it could be the first African country to get into the Semi finale. Ghana had its match with Uruguay and fraught with so many expectations and pressure the match was bound to be dramatic. Just before halftime, Sulley Muntari made a great shot that on 55th minute was canceled out by a free kick by Diego Forlan. So, both the team had an equal score that called for extra-time. Now, it was the part of the game that made people talking about it even after it got over. 

The Free Kick

Ghana had a free kick directing to the box. The ball kept rolling till Luis Suarez stopped it with a handball. Asamoah Gyan had the last kick and he used it by hurling penalty into the crossbar. Uruguayans were happy but Ghanaians were nervous even though they still had their chance in the penalty shootout.
