Iranian Cup

Andrey Gusev described, “Archaeological studies of the area around Lake Parisento and the Yuribei River, located beyond the Arctic Circle, have resulted in surprise finds such as a bronze Iranian cup dated to the Middle Ages (5th to 15th centuries).” “Artifacts from this era have been found in West Siberia before, but never so far in the northeast, let alone in the Arctic. The exact age of the cup will be determined after further studies,”

Going Further

By now, the curiosity had taken the best of them. Scientists kept digging the ground and discovered much more ancient stuff including a temple ring, and remains of fur/ animal skin. “We can definitely say that this child was not ordinary. He or she was from some wealthy family, judging by the things laid in the grave. The parents could afford quite expensive things.”

Trade Route

Dr. Arkady Baulo of the Novosibirsk Institute of Archaeology and Ethnography shed light on the possible reason behind the presence of bowl on the site. According to him, the bowl came here with Asian merchants. In those days, the merchants used to export furs, hunting birds, and walrus tusks from the north. The merchants had to go through Kama and Ob regions for doing trade in the 7th and 8th centuries.

Offering

Well, this finding was very special in the sense that these northeast artifacts from that ancient era were discovered quite far from their region. the items were found in the Arctic. Scientists say that these Persian items must have been used in rituals by the local tribes. And at the time of festivals, the people would have used it to offer food to their gods.

Around The River

That was not the end. After this finding, nine more discoveries were made around the rivers near the Tazovsky Peninsula. Not more than two sites have been excavated till now. And that two sites too were resting place of children just the way Gydan was. Archeologists who have been studying the site states that these sites were very uncommon on the count of its grave’s isolation and for not being in proximity to any burial space.

Grave Questions

As far as the most recent discovery is concerned, a grave of a boy who would not have been more than seven years old was found. The grave must have belonged to either 15th or 16th century. Just like other graves discovered, this one too had stored items alluding that the kid belonged to a rich family. Interestingly, the graves found were only of rich children. The question was why their graves were dug in the center of nowhere?
