Preserved

There was a low level of brackish water, sediments, slow currents and the lacking of shipworm, a mollusk. For those who do not know shipworm is responsible for the decaying of wood. But in the case of The Mars, there was no shipworm onboard. Hence, the ship stayed preserved for so many years.

Tradition

The tradition of keeping records of the sailing vessels began right from the 17 the century but unfortunately, there was no record of the sailing ships that manufactured just a century earlier. Johan Rönnby who has undertaken the task of studying the 197-feet long shipwreck calls it an entirely new chapter in the warship technology. It was like a fresh breeze.

Waiting Centuries

The Mars remained under the water for several centuries. It is nothing short of a surprise that the parts of the ship were still intact. Rönnby calls 16th century as an important era of history as that was the century when Mars and galleons like it belong to.

 Mighty Even In Its Fall

The Mars is not the only ship that has been found belonging to 16th century. There have been many other. But what makes it stand apart is the fact that none of the ships were found in a condition as good as this. For instance, when Henry VIII’s English flagship named Mary Rose was found it was in pieces and bits. Mars had the first rank during its service and even after it had been crushed into pieces the ship continued to hold the position. Well, the ship had been finally found but the next job was even more difficult. Pulling it off the ocean bottom was the real mess.

The Herculean Task

Well, bringing Mars up was not an easy thing to do. While pulling it up they had to make sure that it does not get hurt. Ocean Discovery Company and Lundgren knew that any damage to the ship would only worsen the matter. So, Lundgren and Ocean Discovery Company put their own method into use. And from there on, that method has become the trend. Almost every archeological examination includes this method. The team was not satisfied yet, they wanted to know more.

The Future Of Oceanic Technology

The technology is advancing day by day and that is the reason now the study tends to be precise as compared to olden days. Ocean Discovery uses 3-D scanning instruments and pictures in order to get laser scans. Why is it important? Well, it helps a lot in recording the data in detail having the accuracy up to 0.8 inches.
