Berserkers

The Vikings were well versed in fighting battles. They knew how to organize ranks and made sure that everyone in the team knew their roles in the coming conflict. The first rows before their vanguards were reserved for veteran fighters called ‘beserkers.’ These fighters had a unique way of dealing worth the enemy team. Just right before the battle, they would fill their system with alcohol and after reaching a trans-like state they would take on the rival army. The ‘beserkers’ were concerned the most ruthless and brutal part of the army.

A Structured Society

There is not much truth in the popular image of Vikings. They were not heartless barbarians. This is true that they have done some brutal things but we should also keep in mind that the time they were in is famous for its brutal and violent nature. And every era in history is famous for some brutal conducts. On the other side, Vikings are also famous for a well-ordered society consisting of three classes. The lowest rung was of Thralls who were slaves, farmers were called Karls, and Jarls were chieftains. Not only that, they had Kings and Queens too.

Ancient Feminists

Even today women have to fight a lot for their rights. Just imagine how difficult would have been for them in bygone eras that guarantee them no rights. The Vikings, however, were different. As mentioned earlier they did not mind women taking part in bloodshedding battles. They were very much progressive when it came to the equal treatment of women. Interestingly, women had the right to own land and even raised as a chief of a household. Which still is quite a fight today.

Discovering America

Who discovered America? Columbus! Well, the majority of people would answer that but technically it was Vikings who discovered this continent. A Viking named Leif Ericsson reached Canadian shores about 500 years before the arrival of Columbus. The land then was named Vinland. Surprised, right?

Creative As Well

One more quality Vikings were known for was their amazing craftsmanship and metalwork. Their skills had improved upon over the years. They learned to use precious metals in the most efficient way over the years and also acquired insights from the robberies they did in villages and towns. The researchers have discovered crafting tools such as axes, hammer, and pliers that makes it clear that the Vikings were well acquainted with the art of craft. They used to craft practical, strong, and potent tools that stay intact for hundreds of years.

Stylish Touches

Well, here we are going to bust another myth. According to popular belief, the Vikings were dirty. That could be true for people of the lower class in those times. However, Vikings were not like that. In fact, Vikings were very much conscious about their hygiene and the same rule was for every stratum of society. Did you know that the Saturday in those days was called Laugardagur which stands for ‘bath day.’ At that particular day, everyone had to bathe. They even used to groom themselves this is what uncovering of razors, combs, and brushes suggests.
