Junky Auction

Weiss was curious to know how this boy became interested in antiques and how did he reach out to this painting.  The boy tells that he regularly visits a “junky auction” which is situated in his hometown in South Jersey. The interviewee continued to surprise Weiss. But what came next was the least expected for the interviewer.

The Art Piece

How did the boy find this painting was an even more fascinating story. Weiss continued to probe and question the boy on his say about the garage auctions. The boy too looked at every piece very carefully and then tried of with bidding. On one summer afternoon, the boy had dragged his father to this junk auction near his place and asked him to wait until he finds something worth bidding.

The Ignored One

The boy tells on air that his father never appreciated this interest of his. Moreover, his father wished to run away from the scorching heat of the sun. But since his son was there he had no other option than staying over in the sun. There at the auction, he realized that this painting seemed to be an interesting one and may have some history behind. But to his astonishment, no other bidder took interest in that. This made the boy even more sure that he will buy this one. And luckily he bought it for just $2.

The Masterpiece

A mere glimpse of the painting made Weiss sure that its worth was much beyond $2. But he still wanted to know if the boy had actually studied this piece of art carefully or not. Though he already knew much about this painting, despite that he wished to test the boy’s incredible knowledge of the antiques. The canvas was colored in mundane earth tones but there was one clue which the boy missed.

A Closer Look

By now, the boy had already left an amazing impression on Weiss. He was truly taken over by the boy’s poise and composure. The boy had picked a piece which no other child of his age would ever bother to even look at from the junk. The boy informs him that he had carefully examined the painting and he was likely that these are watercolors. However, due to the painting being glassed, he could not be sure about it. Well, finally it was the time for the expert to step in and leave the boy amazed.

The Signature

Weiss was surprised to see that the painting which was glassed and actually painted in watercolors, could still manage to get to the boy’s knowledge. Weiss tells the boy that the signature on the painting which could not manage to catch the boy’s eye was of Albert Neuhuys and this piece of work is one of the most impressive collections of all the time. And now came the most important question, how much does it cost?
