Stepping Stone

It was in 1949, the Soviet Union carried out its first test. It was a success. The reason behind it was that the Soviet’s espionage had successfully fetched all the details regarding the U.S. Manhattan Project along with the Trinity test conducted on 16 July 1945. The device used by Soviet was also similar. From thereon August 29 was celebrated as the day when this remarkable test took place. Well, that was just the beginning. The Soviet Union had miles to go. Confident and inspired from the success the team went on to expand its research. All this resulted in the setting up of two special plants. Everything seemed sorted except for the fact that both of the things were above ground that definitely was going to hinder the process.

Should Be In Budget

Though the government wanted to achieve the target as soon as possible they wanted it to be budget friendly too. Instead of going for expensive resources the establishment took work from inexpensive miners along with other laborers. Surprisingly, even the prisoners from Taiga were inducted into the team of workers. All of them together had to complete the project being held in a mountain area in the vicinity of Yenisei River in a short span of time.

Digging Deep!

The work was consistently going on without a halt of a second. The workers kept digging until they reached to the core of the mountain. It was a tedious job that demanded full attention and time. How deep were they willing to go? Well, the aim was to reach the depth of 200 to 230 meters or reach 656 to 754 feet.

Everything Exceptional

Not only the project but the building it was processing in was exceptional too. As the structure was built to shelter one of the dearest projects of the nation, it was engineered accordingly. Even after several years, the construction is considered as one of the best examples of engineering.

Closed Town

The institution was located in the vicinity of Zheleznogorsk also known as “closed town” among the people of Krasnoyarsk Krai. It is called so the city does not allow entry to the ordinary Soviet citizens. In fact, the place is guarded with barbed wire to prevent any infiltration from the strangers.
