Maynard Kaiser, a worker who was returning to the surface from the pit, fell into the shaft and lost his life. Actually, the rope he was tied to came loose and got displaced from the pulley, which resulted the shaft falling into the infamous money pit. Despite such tragedies, a plethora of people tried to get to the mysterious treasure.
