Denied The Richest

Millionaire John Jacob Astor, an American elite personality who was not only the richest person onboard but was supposedly among the richest people across the globe. He asked Charles to let him be with his wife on the boat. To this, he refused as his role was to save the women and children first. John wasn’t allowed on the lifeboat and couldn’t make it out of the sea that night.  The last minute arrived and half of the people were still on the ship.

The Last Minute

Charles was on the ship till the last minute, the rest of the officers left but he was aware of his duties and stayed back. In the last minute, the ship broke into two pieces and was going down, Charles tried to swim but couldn’t as he pulled underwater by the force of the waves. Within 2 hours and 45 minutes of hitting the iceberg, Titanic went underwater and what was left were countless people in the freezing cold.

In order to make his way to the surface, Charles dropped a heavy revolver which was attached to his belt. He was losing his sensing as he wasn’t able to hold his breath anymore. While the ship was going down, there was a blast underwater which pushed him towards the surface at a rapid speed. He was freezing cold but made it to the ocean’s surface. Miraculously, he found a turned lifeboat which with all his strength, he turned another way around. He saved 30 other people who were almost living their last breaths and sailed the boat throughout the chilled night until all of them were rescued by RMS Carpathia.

Charles Lightoller is said to be the last Titanic survivor and highest ranking Titanic officer taken aboard. When he was questioned during the investigations for the unfortunate Titanic sinking he defended the White Star Line. He even continued working for the company until another historic event called for him.

World War I shooked Europe, and Charles Lightoller was assigned to work in Britain’s Royal Navy. Many people who survived Titanic sinking were never able to get over the traumas of the doomed night. But Charles’ dedication and eagerness to serve his nation took him to the war seas. He was again on a warship that will soon meet a dreadful end.

Charles Lightoller served at the HMS Oceanic until it sank in 1914. He was unstoppable as he further served at many other warships during the war. Out of these, he commanded two of the ships. In 1918, he survived the HMS Falcon after it collided with another ship. This time he was seriously hurt but again got better much quicker than expected.
