Before Phelps arrived in the scene, Mark Spitz was the king of the world of swimming. When it comes to the awards he has won, the list becomes quite long. He has won a total of 9 Olympic gold medals and a silver medal and a bronze medal. He was the star performer in the Summer Olympics held at Munich in the year 1972, in which he won 7 gold medals, a record which was later broken by Michael Phelps.
