In the 1950s, people started abandoning the North Brother Island as they realized it was impractical to be living on the island and working in New York. It required constantly ferrying between the two places. The authorities, on the other hand, were concerned about the maintenance of the island. It was decided that the people would abandon the place as there was plenty of cheap housing available in New York by now and the island was left to nature.
