Not A Piece Of Waste

The thing was that they didn’t want to sell it nor were they willing to leave it in the trash. Yes, the piano was of no use for Graham and Meg anymore but they knew it might mean a lot to someone else. The couple wanted to out this piano at the right place in the right use. And that’s when things get complicated.

A Will And A Way

The most suitable saying will be, “where there is a will, there is a way.” The Hemmings remembered, “It was during the summer term in 2016 that the Community College appealed to the local community for the donation of any unwanted pianos, as the school did not have enough pianos that students could use for lessons or practice.”

Donating An Old Piano

In 2016, Graham was 72, and Meg was 65 years old when they decided to donate the piano. They knew it was working fine and in playable condition. They were donating it to a local college for the students. Isn’t that a generous act? But along with the piano, the Hemmings also gave up on a fortune. Wondering how can a piano cost someone a fortune?

The Donation

After Graham and Meg donated the piano, it wasn’t directly put into use. The principal of the college called for a piano tuner to take a closer look at it. This one step was about to bring one of the biggest discovery of the year.

At The Doorstep

The couple recalled how they not only donated but also delivered the piano till the college’s music room, “In 2005 the piano moved into storage prior to our purchasing a house in Bishop’s Castle where we were privileged to live until we decided to ‘downsize’ in 2016. As our children had married and left home the piano was rarely played and functioned as a rather attractive piece of furniture in our dining room. We gladly donated and delivered the piano to the local Community College prior to our recent move in the knowledge that they would put it to good use.”

What Was Inside the Piano?

Piano tuner technician Martin Backhouse was 61 years old and has been fixing pianos for most of his life. As he recalled, “It was one of those incredible moments. I had only taken out the first octave when I realized something was going on.” What could possibly be hiding in just another piano? Well, it was not just a random piano, not anymore.
