This letter that Xu had placed next to his daughter was a heartbreaking cry from two helpless parents who just want their daughter to be safe. It read,“Our daughter, Jingzhi, was born at 10 am on the 24th day of the seventh month of the lunar calendar, 1995. We have been forced by poverty and affairs of the world to abandon her. Oh, pity the hearts of fathers and mothers far and near!”

The Only Request

The letter further cited their gratitude to whoever took the responsibility of raising their abandoned daughter. It says,”Thank you for saving our little daughter and taking her into your care. If the heavens have feelings, if we are brought together by fate, then let us meet again on the Broken Bridge in Hangzhou on the morning of the Qixi Festival in 10 or 20 years from now.”

One Child Policy

If you feel curious about this policy that China had adopted, here is a little information about how it came into existence. The one-child policy had been adopted by the Mao government all the way back in 1979. As we all know, China’s population was growing at an uncontrollable pace which made them use this to hopefully manage the population and fight poverty.

Ended In 2015

This policy proved to be an effective one that had certainly helped China in the long run. The program was implemented and used for more than 35 years. An estimated amount of around 400 million births have been reportedly prevented because of this policy. However, by the end of 2015, China has stopped running this policy and the number of childbirth is not controlled anymore.

First Meeting

So what would become of the little orphan’s fate now that her parents have let her go? Well, not so long after Jingzhi has been dropped off at the children’s welfare institute in Suzhou with the message from her parents, fate had plans for the baby girl. Ken and Ruth Pohler, along with nine other families were actually traveling to China where they met little Jingzhi.

The Adoption

The couple had traveled with Bethany Christian Services to the orphanage all the way to China where they adopted their new daughter. Ken and Ruth did not hesitate to take care of the baby as her adoptive parents. They felt like this was fate and that they were meant to be a family.
