8 Adoptive Parents Later…

For the next two years, Gumby would bounce from home to shelter, to home and back again.

So, all in all, how many homes did this active dog run away from? You would not believe how many families this dog managed to ghost! He’s had a total of 8 adoptive parents, with everyone returning him to the shelter for not being able to tame him. Gumby was also picked up off the streets three times after he seemingly tried running away from his owners. His behavior was not only dangerous for himself but it was also very stressful for his adopter and the people who worked at the shelter.

Not Enough For Him

Had something happened to him in the past for him to react this way? His revolving door of adoptive families had cared for him and fed him, but he wasn’t happy. There was something that was missing from these families that made Gumby feel like they were not enough. His heart was already somewhere else and all these new families were not making the cut. Maybe because he was in charge of his own life for so long while he stayed in the streets that he could not deal with these families training him or be restricting him.

Always Trying To Escape

His revolving door of adoptive families had cared for him and fed him, but he wasn't happy.

Gumby was so friendly with the staff and was also very nice to the families when they met him. What makes you think a family would adopt a dog if he was not behaving well with them? He just kept trying to escape every time, which is why the owners got tired of it and brought him back to the shelter. In the end, he would always become a problem of the shelter and so there was finally an explanation to all this. A staff member at the shelter figured out why Gumby was compelled to return.

Gumby Is An Empath

According to the shelter's behavior team leader, Donya Satriale, Gumby is an empath.

Gumby would ease the minds of the other rescued pets and put their fears to rest. So that made him a very crucial member of the animal shelter he stayed in. He could actually help. According to the shelter’s behavior team leader, Donya Satriale, Gumby is an empath. So what does that mean you ask? This means he has a skill that allows him to comfort new dogs coming into the shelter. He could help the new dogs to feel at home and help calm their nervousness or fear when they get rescued by the animal shelter.

Gumby Becomes An Ambassa-dog

So what happened to Gumby, the escapist’s fate after all of his episodes? In the end, there was only one solution that was going to make sense. The staff had been wondering why the dog kept returning to the shelter even if he had found a better place to stay when he was adopted so many times. It was a long time coming and the workers took all this time to make a decision that profited everyone. Instead of putting her up for adoption again, Satriale made him an “ambassa-dog.”

An Efficient Helper At The Shelter

It turns out there were a lot of things that this dog was used for. The animal shelter did not expect that Gumby would become so helpful in the working of their shelter. But aside from helping the new arrivals adjust to their life at the shelter, he also helps kitties at the Charleston Animal Society by donating blood, which helps cats fight infection. Who would have thought that the dog that caused so much frustration and trouble would end up becoming such an asset to them?
