The Quest For Food

Well, survival, of course, isn’t easy in a place like this, but for starters, both Zack and the Wyatts grow vegetable and Fruits in and around their huts (which are most probably built out of abandoned cabins). They fulfill their need of protein by hunting the deer present around the island. They also have their oyster farm and fishes (particularly Halibut) to fall back on.

But, surely, that can’t be all that they survive on?

Visiting Modern Civilization

Well obviously not, Quite often Zack and Wyatt have to make trips to the mainland but the frequency of these trips is usually once every couple of months. The main aim behind these trips is to stock up for all the food that is either impossible to cultivate on the island or cannot be hunted. While on the mainland they also stock up on their gas rations needed to keep their generators running. These generators are in fact the only source of power in the island.

An Island To Oneself

While keeping in mind all the discomforts and challenges presented by the island, Zack still manages to live a very beautiful life. He had this unique sense of uncurtailed liberty and independence to enjoy on this island.  He has formed an intimate relationship with mother nature and it fulfills every need of his body and soul. Plus not many people can say they have an entire island as their home.

All this probably makes it worth the sacrifices. Well, it surely does for Zach.

A Beautiful, Mystical Home

The island itself is a majestic place, one can see whales diving and floating in all directions of the island. Along with the presence of the majestic sea creatures. The island itself is populated by all sorts of amazing creatures freely running around the entire island. Sharing the company of so many untamed beasts might seem a little unreal, sometimes spooky.

Zach’s Spiritual Self

Throughout his time on the island, Osterman made an extraordinary observation about Zack. He writes, “Zach’s spirituality is in a beautiful harmony with nature here. He grows with the forest and moves with the tides” as he captures Zach’s “relationship with this remote and vast environment” in his pictures.

No Humans To Deal With – A Blessing?

Zack confessed that he would often go without any sort of external human interaction for as long as 6 months. But that has never affected him. He finds himself always busy exploring this mysterious island, its rich past and native art left behind by the Tlingit and Haida people who once inhabited this beautiful island.
