Mount Vesuvius WWII

nature photos
This picture was taken in 1944 during the World War II by US B-25 bombers. This is Mount Vesuvius in Italy, around which were stationed a number of US aircraft for vigilance when without any warning this volcano burst. It was the 340th Bombardment Group of the US Air Force that was on duty at the nearby Pompeii Airfield near Terzigno, Italy.
The hot lava gulped down 80-90 aircraft. Today the foot of the volcano is highly populated.
