The senior citizens of the country are often an overlooked part of the population, relegated to nursing homes in their twilight years. They’re not an immediate target group for any marketing strategy, but did you know that some establishments are giving these retirees some much-needed attention in the form of discounts? Here’s a list of discounts that can be availed only if you’re a retiree, but remember, only if you ask for them! And sure enough, you’ll be saving more money than you’re shelling it out!

1. Cruise Deals

Cruises are a great way to relax and explore new territories at the same. They are all-inclusive deals where you can unwind, savor delicious meals and drinks, and enjoy the variety of performances on board. Cruise lines also happen to offer a huge variety of discounts for senior citizens over the age of 55. This includes some well-known companies such as Carnival Cruises and Royal Caribbean. But it is to be kept in mind that these discounts are not applicable to all cruises, and must be checked with the specific cruise company. 

2. Discount on Car Insurance

Car insurances are a necessity for any driver of sorts. They are a godsend in cases of emergencies and accidents. However, they also happen to be an expensive commodity which is hard to keep up with. This is especially true for senior citizens, who are only dependant on their pension for all their payments. But it is a little-known fact that senior citizens can avail discounts on their car insurances!

3. Save on Your Mortgage

Mortgaging one’s property can spell trouble if the payments are not made on time. It is hard as is to upkeep the regular payments, but more so for the seniors. So Obama had passed a government program to help the middle-class senior Americans reduce their monthly payments by as much as $4,264 each year. The program has since been forgotten, but it is still valid for seniors to avail the discounts if they decide to refinance their mortgage. 

4. Save on Groceries

Senior discounts in food establishments are common, but did you know that some supermarkets offer these too? A variety of stores give senior discounts now, it’s just a matter of asking. Some of these stores include Farm Fresh, Publix, Fred Meyer, New Seasons Market, Compare Food Market, to name a few. The discounts differ for each establishment and location, as well as guidelines for availing them.

5. Save on Medicine

With age, our bodies start refusing to cooperate with us. And so, medications are needed to keep out bodies functioning normally. Most retirees need at least one, if not multiple, prescriptions, so it is only right that there should be discounts on them. Retail stores such as CVS, Walgreens, Target, Walmart, and Rite Aid offer discounts in their pharmacy section. Some pharmaceutical companies even issue special discount cards for senior citizens, which can be utilized at the time of payment.

6. Discounts On Credit Card Payments

It’s always a struggle to pay off credit card debts, and so a debt relief program for senior citizens – Freedom Debt Relief – was established to ease the burden of paying the full amount. If the amounting debt is more than $20,000, it can be easily resolved with the help of the program, and one can find themselves debt free in a matter of 24-48 months!
